Kidneys are the organs of the body which keep the blood pure. They remove the toxins from the blood and excrete them out through the urine. If the kidneys do not function well, then the human body starts retaining fluid within. When the blood can no longer hold these fluids, then the fluid gets accumulated in the cells. First the cells, then the lungs, then the heart starts getting filled with fluids till the body can no longer take the puffed effect. Thus the face starts puffing out and the fluid buildup finally becomes fatal.
What is acute renal failure diet?
Acute renal failure occurs when the kidney stops functioning thus affecting the internal systems. The kidney is at this point of time unable to throw out the wastes from the blood. The wastes are an end product of digestion. Thus an acute renal failure becomes a chronic kidney disease. A renal failure at its final stage requires dialysis which removes the extra wastes accumulated in the body. A renal failure happens due to high blood pressure, diabetes and other health problems.
A renal failure diet consists of controlling the protein and phosphorus content in the diet. Sodium in excess in our diet is not good. An acute renal failure diet thus helps to decrease the accumulation of wastes in the body and helps to work the system better. An acute renal failure diet thus focuses on having things which would not increase the triggers for renal failure like blood pressure, diabetes etc. The following are some of the ways by which we could adhere to this kind of diet routine:
- Make a checklist of acute renal failure diet items and make a combination to have a variety each day.
- It is good to carry a list of the items that you are supposed to have when you are out of home. A good diet plan would ensure that there are no lapses that a person could have with an acute renal failure problem.
While following a diet, the following things should be kept in mind while consuming food:
- Protein : An acute renal failure diet requires limited protein content. This helps the kidneys to function better. So high protein foods like meat, poultry, chicken, fish, eggs and dairy products should be avoided. With the advice of the doctor, the protein consumption per day should be calculated.
- Phosphorus : The phosphorus content causes the calcium to get depleted in the bones. Thus an acute renal failure diet needs the phosphorus levels to be maintained. Thus, dairy products and beans, peas, nuts and liquids such as cocoa, beer and cola drinks should be had in control.
- Sodium : Extra sodium leads to high blood pressure and also produces extra fluid in the body. Table salt, canned foods, processed food, deli meats and sausages having extra sodium content should be curbed. Similarly salt substitutes should also be avoided as they increase the potassium content. Mozzarella, parmesan and ricotta cheese have low sodium and so are good. Cheddar cheese is not good food for renal failure.
- Potassium : Potassium consumption doesn’t have to be limited, yet it is a good idea to limit it if there is already a lot of potassium consumption. High potassium foods like nuts, avocados, potatoes, pumpkin, oranges, kiwi, peaches, and apricots should be avoided. Low potassium foods like applesauce, black berries, grapes, tangerines, canned peas, asparagus, should be had.
- Vitamin and Mineral supplements : Calcium supplements keep the kidney functioning well.
- Homemade soups are the best.
- All unprocessed meats, poultry, fish, besides fresh and frozen vegetables, vegetable juices, fruit juice and canned vegetables are good components of an acute renal failure diet.
Thus it is seen that people with an acute kidney failure struggle to process the fluids in the body and get stressed because of excess accumulation of salt in the body. Thus this combination of too much fluid and salt becomes life threatening. This is the reason why an acute renal failure diet should be good enough. It keeps the kidneys functioning well. An acute renal failure diet needs us to eat well and eat right as otherwise the body might not get sufficient nutrients. If the diet is not followed then the body does not get enough calories or proteins. It also does not get the nutrients it has to get. A lack of an acute renal failure diet results in exerting the kidneys more and may cause a complete failure.
