Acute renal failure occurs when the kidney suddenly fails. This happens due to accidents that could injure the kidney and lead to a steady decline in the functioning of the kidney. Waste products accumulate in the kidney blood and this leads to acute renal failure symptoms. The following symptoms are typical of acute renal failure symptoms. They are:
- Decreased urine production
- Swelling of body parts

- There are problems with concentration
- There is a lot of confusion
- The person feels tired and fatigued
- The person feels lethargic
- There is a feeling of nausea and vomiting
- The patient has diarrhea.
- There is a lot of pain in the abdomen
- The mouth has a metallic taste
- Seizures and coma often form a part of very grave acute renal failures.
- Increased acidity in the body : Also called metabolic acidosis, this occurs because the acute kidney failure symptoms render the kidney unable to manufacture bicarbonate. This substance maintains the metabolism process in the kidneys. In the absence of this bicarbonate, the enzymes and the oxygen content change. This causes more acidity.
- Hyperkalemia : This is a condition in the body, which restricts the kidney’s capacity to throw out potassium and excess potassium levels in the serum. This serum level and the hearth rhythm functions are connected. Thus, acute renal failure symptoms and arrhythmia occur together. Thus, ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation form a part of acute renal failure symptoms.
- Uremia : This condition happens during renal failure. The urea levels rise in the blood and this affects many other organs like brain, heart lining etc. This also affects the muscles in the body. When the urea levels rise, then we call it uremia. When the increased urea levels affect the brain then we call it encelopathy. When it affects the lining of the heart, then it is then we call it pericarditis. When the muscle functions reduce due to a renal failure then the condition is called hypocalcaemia.
- Weakness : This weakness is caused because there is a reduction in the count of the red blood corpuscles. This condition is called anemia. The erythropoietin is a substance that stimulates the bone marrow to produce the red blood corpuscles. When the body shows symptoms of acute renal failure, this erythropoietin does not stimulate the bone marrow enough. Thus, the blood count of the red blood corpuscles reduce and this leads to a decrease in the oxygen in the blood. All this tires the body out. When there is lesser oxygen in the blood, then the cells follow anaerobic metabolism. In anaerobic metabolism, the metabolism is without oxygen. This kind of metabolism results in a lot of acid production.
- Lethargy : After Acute renal failure symptoms, show up the blood soon is filled with waste products. This leads to a loss of appetite and the victim becomes lazy, and tired. Sometimes the situation worsens and the person heads towards other problems. The mental set up of the person faces a setback. The person stands a threat of entering a state of coma.
- Breathlessness : The symptoms of acute renal failure are very commonly seen in people with breathlessness. Breathlessness is a common sign seen in people. Whenever this happens, it is advisable to check it up. The increase of acid content in the body leads to the lungs trying to stop the acidity by throwing out more carbon di oxide. This creates a kind of pressure because of the extra fluid within. This fluid is deposited in the lungs, thus causing a heart failure. That is the reason acute renal failure symptoms like breathlessness should be immediately attended to.
- Azotemia : When the kidneys fail, lot of waste accumulates not only in the blood but also in the body. This leads to visible symptoms.
- Uraemia : When the renal failure is symptomatic with many major symtpoms, then it is called uremia.
- Vomiting : This is caused by the high levels of urea in the blood. This vomiting leads to dehydration.
- Nausea : Typical of any health reaction, the body reacts to the renal failure by affecting the digestive system. The kidneys are the filters in the digestive system and when they fail, they create a regurgitation of the juices and cause acute nausea.
- Weight loss : Considerable weight loss is due to the lack of proper intake of food. This is because the kidneys fail and result in an inability to function well.
- Urine : The urine is foamy and bubbly and in smaller amounts.
