Acute or sudden injury to the kidney occurs when the kidney suddenly loses its capacity to function. The causes of such an injury could be innumerable but the main causes are low blood capacity, toxin exposure, prostate enlargement etc.

Acute renal failure treatment involves identifying the main cause of the failure. According to this treatment for acute renal failure, we should avoid the substances that cause this problem. Management of a kidney failure involves the following. They are as follows:

  • Avoid the toxic substances.
  • These toxic substances or nephrotoxins also include NSAIDs like ibuprofen, iodinated contrasts etc.
  • Monitoring of the functions of the kidneys by monitoring the serum creatinine levels
  • Monitoring the output of urine
  • Stopping any kind of bladder obstruction

Specific Treatment – Renal Failure

  • Intravenous treatment : In the specific acute renal failure treatment, the kidneys are injected with intravenous fluids. A central venous catheter is used to monitor the level of the fluids. This is to ensure that the fluid is neither over replaced nor under replaced.
  • Inotropes : Sometimes we see that the problem is due to low blood pressure. At such times, inotropes are given. These help in maintaining the cardiac output and thus enable proper renal function.
  • Agents : When the acute kidney injury is induced by toxins then it is treated at the pre renal stage of the ailment. At such times, agents like aminoglycoside, penicillin or acetaminophen are induced and the kidney responds well at such times.
  • Blockage removal : Removal of any kind of obstruction in the urinary tract is also another acute renal failure treatment. Doctors remove this with a nephrostomy or urinary catheter.
  • Diuretic agents : In this kind of treatment for acute renal failure is reduced by using the diuretics like furosemide. This reduces the fluid overload and helps in preventing any further complications. However, there is no guarantee of not having a risk at this time.

Thus, we see that the main aim of an acute renal failure treatment is to relax the kidneys completely. These treatments include:

  • Identify the cause of the renal failure and correct it accordingly.
  • Treatments give support to the kidneys until they have been cured, healed and are working properly.
  • Treatments prevent any further complications.

Besides the above treatments, there are many other ways of treating the acute renal failure treatment:

  • Restoration of fluids : We have to replace the lost fluids. The blood flow has to be restored to the kidneys. It is seen that in case of prerenal acute renal failure, the cause is normally dehydration or loss of blood. If the fluid and blood levels are rectified, then the kidney would function normally again.
  • Medicinal discomfort : It is helpful to discontinue the medicines, which could be causing the renal problems. It is important to understand which medicines are causing the problem and stop those medicines.
  • Dependent factors : Doctors treat the kidney disease by using exchange of plasma, cortisol and other medicines that are dependent on the disease.
  • Autoimmune treatment: If an autoimmune disorder is causing the acute renal failure then we can stop the immune system by using appropriate medicines to stop this. Such disorders are lupus etc that cause the blood vessels to swell. This is known as vasculitis.
  • Blockage removal : In post renal failure, it is good to remove the block in the urinary tract. Very often, the kidney starts functioning properly after a blockage is removed. In this condition the urine flows out well and some blockages like kidney stones etc can be removed. If the blockage is not stopped then the urine is allowed to pass through a stent or a catheter. A catheter helps to relieve the acute renal failure symptoms and helps the kidneys to come back to normal.
  • Primary illness treatment : Sometimes the acute renal failure occurs when the patient is already in the hospital being treated for some other illness. It is necessary to treat the primary illness first so that with this treatment for acute renal failure subsides.
  • Controlled fluid intake : Restoration of lost fluids helps in speedy recovery of the failed kidney. However, we should also control fluid intake as it could lead to an unwanted fluid buildup.
  • Nutrition : To treat the failed kidneys, it is important to have a diet that is conducive to the condition. A diet with limited fluid intake ensures that we do not put too much stress on the kidneys.
