We face a lot of stress in life. This causes a lot of anxiety. Stressful conditions cause anxiety and stress related situations. Individuals suffering from anxiety learn to manage it well; however, managing anxiety sometimes causes anxiety.
Anxiety affects our lifestyle and our whole self. Anxiety causes a lot of influence on how we behave, and manifests with many physical symptoms. Anxiety causes fear. This fear is unknown, and anxiety causes fear about something we do not know. Anxiety can be mild or unsettling. Mild anxiety is very unsure and disturbing. Severe anxiety is very disastrous.
What causes anxiety disorders?
The causes of anxiety are many factors, which may be as follows:
- Psychological factors
- Cognitive theory
- Behavioral theory
- Developmental theory
- Biological factors
- Regulation of brain chemistry
- Changes in the brain activity
- Genetic factors
- Other factors
Though there are many reasons for the causes of anxiety, yet it we do not know exactly what causes anxiety. Besides the above factors, there are many other reasons why this problem occurs regularly:
• Stressful or traumatic incidents
• When there is a family history of disorders regarding anxiety
• When there are issues related to development in childhood.
• When there is a consumption of alcohol or any kind of illicit substances
• When there are medical or psychiatric problems
- Psychological factors
There are two main theories regarding the psychological factors of anxiety. While one is the cognitive theory, the other is the behavioral theory. There is another reason for anxiety and that is the development theory. This enables us to understand the relation between anxiety in adults and anxiety in children.
- Cognitive theory
This theory suggests that people with anxiety tend to exaggerate the situation of anxiety. Thus, many times when we cannot figure out what causes anxiety it could be just a compounded effect of the already present minute problem. Thus, a person who is scared of animals could exaggerate the problem and the phobia by constantly getting anxious about it and leading himself to believe that something grave is going to happen. This is one of the common causes of anxiety.
- Behavioral Therapy
Sometimes people have a fear of a particular place or of a specific feeling. The anxiety resurfaces when the same situation, or sound or feeling recurs. Therefore, anxiety has a cue by which it starts. Thus, the individual is in a condition where he knows what situation is going to make him anxious. This will stop him from wondering what causes anxiety. Many times a person does not like certain situations. However, when the very same situation comes again, the person realizes that this situation was something that he never wanted. Gradually an impending unwanted situation starts becoming one of the causes of anxiety.
- Developmental theory
Children learn to handle stress the way they see their parents handling. A person’s self-control is thus a major role in setting an example for the children. People who feel life is out of control get into an equally high anxious state. Sometimes something as simple as a job interview leads the person into an anxious state as he keeps wondering how he is going too rated and assessed. This in itself leads him into anxiety. He would worry about his selection. This would be the main cause of anxiety for him.
- Biological factors
There are many activities in the brain, which sometimes cause problems. This is when the medical, genetic, and psychiatric need arise.
- Genetic factors
An anxious parent many a time gives birth to an anxious child. If the family has, a history of getting anxious then the child also shows similar symptoms. They feel getting anxious is the way to solve a difficult situation. Thus, these children react to stress by getting anxious and consider this as a solution.
- Medical factors
There are many substances, like medicines, which are actually the common causes of anxiety. Stimulants like cocaine; caffeine, etc raise the anxiety levels in the body. Thus, it is better to keep away from them. Excess consumption of coffee is not good. One should not take it in large quantities.
- Medical Conditions
Many medical conditions are causes of anxiety. Anxiety involves effects caused due to the medical conditions of the brain, the lungs, or the heart.
Sometimes a panic disorder induced malfunctioning of the heart causes anxiety.
Many times psychiatric conditions lead to causes of anxiety.
