Arthritis is a degenerative disease which happens because of age.The bones get stiff and there is lot of pain in the joints.Obesity also contributes to the pain as there is more weight felt by the joints.This kind of arthritis is called osteoarthritis. Another kind of arthritis occurs when there is a lot inflammation in many joints. This results in a swelling of the joints and is very painful.

Arthritis Diet
Even though there are many rules and regulations to be followed in an arthritis diet yet we could have basic guidelines which would help us to deal with the problem better:
Tuna,salmon, sardines and other cod liver oil supplements are good
- Kiwi fruit,peaches,oranges are good as they are rich in Vitamin C
- Unsalted nuts rich in Vitamin E are good
- Turmeric and ginger used in curries,soups or stews are anti inflammatory foods
- Coconut water, coconut milk etc are good for arthritis.
- Vegetable juices like beetroot juice, cucumber juice etc and cooked vegetables like squash, zucchini, pumpkin.
- Spices like cumin, coriander, ginger, asafetida, garlic, fennel, and turmeric. Green salad with lemon juice and salt is also good.
- Porridge of rice and lentils is good.
Foods Aggravating Arthritis
- It has been seen that vegetables from solanum, potatoes, capsicums, eggplant and tomatoes are not good for arthritis diet.
- Red meat has been seen to affect arthritis problem.
- Full fat dairy products, fatty meat, baked foods etc which are high in saturated fat are not good for arthritis.
- Spicy, hot and fried foods, sweets, gas forming foods like cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, okra, potatoes etc should be avoided.
- Arthritis diet does not accept too much tea, coffee, alcohol, white sugar, yogurt, chocolate, cocoa etc.
- It is advisable to abstain from antibiotics, painkillers, steroids, nicotine etc.
- Sleeping during the day makes the bones and joints lethargic.So this is best avoided.
- Staying up late at night similarly goes against the system and affects the joints and aggravates the pain.
- Arthritis is directly affected by worry, anxiety, fear, stress, sorrow etc.At such times, the pain increases.
Thus diet for arthritis becomes very important to be monitored. It is possible to understand where we went wrong and we can isolate the food from the list. Diet for arthritis is important because food contains vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates and protein etc. It is a holistic nutrition fact that we can cure arthritis through arthritis diet.Food has some chemicals which could cause or reduce the inflammation in the joints.
There are other food items which affect arthritis.The following are the foods which would affect a patient affected with arthritis:
- Sugar: Sugar brings down the capacity of the cells to fight the infection.It also alters the immunity of the body. Thus any person with any kind of immunity disorder is advised to stay away from sugar.
- Protein sources: Fish has omega-3 fatty acids which helps to build the immunity level.This is a major component which reduces inflammation. Fish has a lot of protein filled diet and so is a major component of arthritis diet.

- Carbohydrate content is a good requisite to combat arthritis. Thus a part of diet for arthritis includes wheat breads, pastas and rice.
- Gin soaked raisins is an anti inflammatory compound but it should not be had in excess. The gin could reduce the pain but it should be kept in mind that it could also be detrimental to the benefits of good health.
- Green tea: Green tea is a good way of reducing arthritic pain. The polyphenolic compounds in the green tea help to relieve arthritic pain in mices.It have not been confirmed in human beings as yet.
- Osteoarthritic pain is relieved by consuming avocado, soybean oils etc.
- Besides all this, black currant oil, borage oil and boron are beneficial for arthritic diet.Boron fruits include fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Bovine cartilage taken out of the windpipe and trachea of the cows is a good anti-inflammatory substance which is a good treatment for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Arthritis is a disease of the joints and requires that we have sufficient physical exercise to relax the joints besides eating the right kind of food. A massage with oil gives good relief.
