Autism is a kind of disorder that shows a broad spectrum of symptoms. It is caused due to a malfunctioning of the neural system. This is typically characterized by an equally dysfunctional social interactive stage and a lack of communication. This is also enhanced by a restricted repeated behavior. The signs of autism disease are seen before the child is three. The brain processes information received by us. In autistic people this information processing doesn’t happen properly. Thus the nerve cells do not connect well and are disorganized and the synapses also go haywire. Besides The Asperger Syndrome and the Pervasive Developmental Disorder, the autistic people also are seen to have disorders of the autism spectrum kind. The Asperger syndrome is a kind of condition where there is a delay in the cognitive development and language. In the Pervasive Developmental Disorder, the conditions of asperger and autism disease are absent.

There are a lot of Autism facts that come up when we discuss autism. Let us see through them.

  • Autism disease is a lifelong condition that leads children to show lesser response to the stimuli that they are given. These people thus are unable to take part in emotions like smiling.
  • Autistic children exhibit behavior which is considered abnormal. They have a flare of temper, or stare into the open, or they simply rock to and fro in a seated posture.
  • A child with autism disease has a problem with learning. They are not able to perform normal tasks such as toilet training easily.
  • People with autism normally have a broken language. They also appear to have an imagination block and are not able to mingle with other kids during play.
  • Autistic people are not easy to accept change. They have behavioral problems while accepting the change.
  • Autism is not contagious. It could be hereditary.
  • Autistic people live life like others. They would have the same life like any other normal person. Their life span is also normal like others.
  • Though autism doesn’t have a cure, an early diagnosis and thus remedial measures taken would ensure that the child is completely developed even with his handicap.
  • Autism was earlier thought to be linked to adult schizophrenia but now has been disassociated.
  • Autism affects one in every 150 American children.
  • If twins are born and one has autism, the chances of the other one having it too, is high.
  • Autism facts show that the mutation on chromose 16 is linked to autism disease. It is observed that there is a DNA region that has the “morpheus” genes. These are the genes that have changed man’s evolution.
  • Autism fact is that there is no blood test, no scan and image that can detect autism. The disease is normally treated with behavioral observation and also screening.
  • Autism is related to environmental factors. Thus drugs, chemicals, and infections during pregnancy, flame retardant, television viewing, heavy metal exposure, antibiotics etc are agents that encourage genes that are predisposed to mutate and thus result in autism.
  • It is seen that countries with higher pollution, decreased Vitamin D levels, and increased television watching result in autism.
  • Autism is prevalent more than childhood cancer, diabetes and AIDS together. This is an autism fact.
  • An autistic child has a larger brain than a normal child. This is because the amygdala in the brain is bigger so larger.
  • Premature babies are more susceptible to autism.
  • Autistic children have a sensitive approach to touch. This is why they do not like being cuddled or hugged.
  • Epileptic seizures, tuberous sclerosis, Tourette syndrome, learning disabilities and acquired deficiency deficit disorder.
  • It is an autism fact that the autism disease produces epilepsy 20-30% of the time.
  • Autistic females often have the Rett Syndrome. This is a condition where the motor co-ordination and language are lost.
  • Normally autistic people do not have a balance of serotonin in the brain. Sometimes there could be neurotransmitters which totally upset the normal development of the brain in the early stages of pregnancy.
  • If a man decides to become a father at an old age, then there is a greater risk of the child getting autism. When children are born to men who are 40 or above, then the risk is higher.

Thus autism disease is beyond our control. Apart from behavioral and psychological therapy, there is no particular cure for the autism disease.
