Though autism is regarded as a development disability that hinders communication with restricted social interaction and at times of repetitive behavior or limited interest in activities, there are different types of autism that one needs to be aware of. Autism is usually one of the types of Autism Disorder that is normally called as Classic Autism or Autism, in general. Though the case differs from individual to individual, the severity of its impact is what classifies them into different categories. Difficulty in manipulation, lack of emotional touch, restrained communication, silence or speaking too little, difficulty in grasping thing, varying levels of intelligence are some of the common elements that are generally observed.
Asperger Syndrome is another type of autism where in a child at one extreme may show some of the exceptional talent, and on other end may restrict to adapt themselves to changes. Some of the children’s may be sensitive towards the bright objects or sound around them while being insensitive towards the pain, while other may lack social skills.
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDO) which is also called as Heller’s Syndrome, depicts the normal growth pattern in children, but the regression rate that dwindles down as they grow up. During this, the affected children’s, which are usually between 2-4 ages draw themselves into shell, restricting their playing and social activities that are quiet important during that stage.
Rett syndrome, unlike other different types of autism, affects only girls. Their other symptoms include loss of muscle in early stages that’s reflected in their style of crawling, walking, reduced eye contacts and hand movements. One distinct feature of this syndrome is that the child loses its ability to perform its motion functions easily. These children’s like Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, have smooth growth at beginning, but later they end up losing their skills and abilities to perform functions.
Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not otherwise Specified, is another type of autism that includes all the neurological disabilities that are not included in the above categories, while some children might have mild symptoms, others symptoms can be unusual way of playing with toys / others difficulty in understanding and relating with people, objects, languages or even surroundings, unusual responses or repetitive or restricted behavioral pattern.
Although autism is a very common developmental disability, usually more than girls, boys seem to be targeted and fallen prey for. No matter what is the level of intelligence, it strikes all equally, with its varying characteristics. Though all these different types of autism almost are similar to each other, only a doctor can identify the differences and treat it accordingly. While other types reflect their symptoms at early stages, Asperger’s may exhibit at later stages of development.
