It usually causes changes in mood, energy, thinking and even behavior from the extremes of being mania to the lowest as cases of depression. These situations can persist for days, weeks or months and it can affect you to such an extent that you become incapable doing your normal work. In severe cases, the person can also go to the extent of even quitting his job, creating huge debts or sometimes even feel he has had enough sleep after going to bed for just two hours. In case of depression, the patient may become too tired to get up from his bed and a feeling of hopelessnes might creep in.

Signs of bipolar disorder may differ from person to person according to pattern, severity and frequency. You will find that some people are more sensitive to either mania or depression while there are also others who show both the types of disorders. Bipolar disorder symptoms include disruptions in mood but it diffres amongst the people. Mania, hypomania, depression and mixed moods are the four kinds of mood disorders and each has unique set of symptoms.

Tendency to commit suicide is another amongst signs of bipolar disorder. It is found out that only 30% of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder tend to commit suicide. When a person talks often about death, self-harm or suicide, it is a sure sign of suicidal tendency; which is a severe case of bipolar disorder symptom. Sometimes the person also feels hopeless or helpless and a burden to others. Sometimes they tend to act recklessly or look for weapons or pills to killing themselves.

The signs of bipolar disorder may not occur always in all affected people. The symptoms of both mania and depression can also occur together in some cases and the mood swings can be in cycles. Between these mood swings, you may even find people carrying on with their normal job and family life. Usually the mood swings tend to increase as you age. And when the affected person is in this situation, it can be a real chaos as it can take him away from family and finances and loss of job too. There are cases of extreme mania where the person can indulge in homicidal acts and risk-taking behaviors. And there are also instances where the person takes to drugs and alcohol as an escape from emotional disorder.

Remember a person starts with the initial signs from late teens and his family should be aware of it. These signs shouldn't be ignored as normal teenage behaviors.
