Chlamydia also known as Chlamydia, is a sexually transmitted disease, which occurs due to bacteria. The bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis causes such diseases. This bacterium infects the cervical area of the women besides the urethra and the rectum in both the sexes. Chlamydia also affects the other parts of the body, like the throat and the eyes. It causes severe problems if left unattended.
symptoms of Chlamydia normally are visible between one and three weeks after they are exposed to the bacteria.  Called the “silent disease” it usually does not show any symptoms. Most of the women who show signs of Chlamydia normally do not show any specific symptoms. Majority of the men also do not show any symptoms. The disease is a slow killer and is not always visible to people. People often consider it a normal occurrence and by the time, they realize that the infection is severe it is too late. Not many people show the symptoms but those who do show, show the following symptoms:

Chlamydia symptoms in women:

  • Vaginal discharge: There is an increase in the vaginal discharge. The cervix causes this kind of discharge.
  • Urination: There is a frequency of increased urination. There is also some visible pain during urination.
  • Pain: There is a lot of pain during sexual intercourse in a person affected with Chlamydia.
  • Abdominal pain:  The victim feels a low abdominal pain during Chlamydia. These are the first signs of Chlamydia.
  • Menstruation: Women have irregular menstrual bleeding and these are regular Chlamydia symptoms.

Chlamydia Symptoms in Men

  • White discharge: There is a white watery discharge from the penis, which stains the underwear.
  • Burning sensation: There is a burning sensation when passing urine.
  • Pain: Men feel a lot of pain in the testicles. There is also some swelling.

Chlamydia in men is lesser visible than in women. Either way, the infection in the rectum does not seem to cause many symptoms. The signs of Chlamydia depend on the gender of the person. Seventy to eighty percent of the women do not show signs of Chlamydia. Women show symptoms of bleeding after intercourse or even in between menstrual periods. The infection passes through anal, vaginal or oral sex. Since sometimes Chlamydia symptoms are not detected, half the infections develop as a pelvic inflammatory disease, infect the fallopian tubes or ovaries, and cause scarring in the reproductive organs. Men show signs of Chlamydia in the form of infectious urethritis. This is an inflammation of the urethra. More than fifty percent of the cases show these symptoms of Chlamydia. Epidiymitis is a condition occurring in the testicles of the men. It causes sterility if left untreated for more than two months. Prostatis is a condition that is a Chlamydia symptom.

Chlamydia Symptoms in the Eye

Earlier, Chlamydia conjunctivitis was the most common cause of blindness in people. Also known as trachoma, signs of Chlamydia in the eye show up after the bacteria is  transmitted through fingers, shared towels, coughing, sneezing etc. Sometimes, newborns are infected in the eye at birth. They show Chlamydia symptoms.

Chlamydia Symptoms and Rheumatological Conditions

We see signs of Chlamydia in reactive arthritis, or the Reiter’s syndrome. This syndrome is visible as a Chlamydia symptom when the triad of arthritis, conjunctivitis and the urethritis is affected.  Such conditions that show Chlamydia symptoms require immediate treatment.

Chlamydia Symptoms as Perinatal Infections

Most of the time, the infants take birth with Chlamydia symptoms show signs of Chlamydia. This is because the mother has passed on the disease. We can also see Chlamydia symptoms in infants with premature birth, infants with conjunctivitis, and in infants, which head for a spontaneous abortion.

Chlamydia Symptoms and Lymph Nodes

Chlamydia trachomatis is the main cause of the medical condition lymphogranuloma venereum. The symptoms are ulcers in the genital areas, swollen lymph nodes in the groin area and inflammation of the rectum. This rectal inflammation is called proctitis. Signs of Chlamydia in the lymph nodes occurs with fever.

Thus, the symptoms of Chlamydia are visible within three weeks after being exposed to the bacteria. Sexually active female teens show more symptoms. The signs of Chlamydia are not very visible. Sometimes there is a discharge from the penis or a burning sensation while passing urine. Sometimes there could be an unusual discharge in the genitals, sometimes the penis opening could itch or burn, sometimes the rectum could pain or the anal area could bleed, or have a discharge, sometimes the throat could be irritable after oral sex all indicating signs of Chlamydia.
