Pain can cause a lot of discomfort and a patient suffering from colorectal cancer will need to face a lot of pain. There are many things responsible for this excessive pain; most important being that a tumor is constantly pressing the nerves or the bones. Any other organ that happens to be near colon too experiences pain. This can pain can be excruciating. Such pains can be taken care of by OTC pain relievers; these do not need doctor’s prescription. These have their side effects like constipation and drowsiness.
Colorectal cancer treatment, has been divided in stages by the doctors namely; stage -I, stage-II, stage -III, and last stage -IV. Stages are normally demarcated by the condition of cancer – how much of cancer is in the colon or rectum wall, and how many lymph nodes have been infected by the cancer. The kind of treatment to be given to you too will be decided by your doctor based on the condition of the colorectal cancer in your body. Basically colorectal cancer treatment is of three different ways. Surgery is the preferred way to remove tumors of colon and rectal cancer. This treatment can be given to a patient who is carrying a colorectal cancer of stage - I. The surgeon here makes many small incisions in the abdominal wall, and the instruments are inserted, with the help of the cameras and this is how your colon is displayed on the monitor.
Chemotherapy is the second way by which colorectal cancer treatment can be given; here the cancer cells are killed by using certain drugs. When there is a fear that rectal cancer or colon cancer might occur again, chemotherapy is used. The chemical agents used in this therapy treatment kill micro organisms or all cancerous cells. All cancerous cells and cells that are left after the surgery, are killed by chemotherapy medicines. Lastly , there is radiotherapy which is also used for colorectal cancer treatment. It uses ionizing radiation, which is used basically for cancers and tumors. It is also used in bone marrow transplant.
Colorectal cancer once removed, has an underlying risk that it can reappear in the pelvic area, therefore use of radiotherapy is best for colorectal cancer treatment. In fact, combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, has shown better results for colorectal cancers. This has now become a standard treatment and is one of the most common forms of cancer in the USA. There are ongoing studies and experiments to make the results better and reduce risks of reoccurrence. Targeted drug therapy too can be administered along with chemotherapy, and can be given on its own. Some patients suffering from colorectal cancer may benefit from this while others may not.
