Types of hearing loss are conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss or sudden hearing loss, central hearing loss, functional hearing loss and mixed hearing loss. Whatever type of hearing loss it may be, one should immediately catch a doctor to find the cause and the treatment for the hear loss. Two major elements that are pre-requisites for proper hearing function are air and blood, inside the ear. Your doctor would want to know everything about your hearing loss, when did you first realize it, if there is family history or you have had any ear infections in past. They also want to know how rapid is your hearing loss progressing. SSHL- sudden sensorineural hearing loss, means where your hearing loss is out of blue, sudden and not expected.

Sudden hearing loss can be much unforeseen or could take two to three days to set in. This condition summons for an immediate visit to your doctor as this will be treated as a medical emergency. Doctor will require running normal test to test hearing, which should help in diagnosis. There are people who recover completely without any medical intercession or inter mediation. This is known as recovery without any delay – spontaneous recovery. At the same time, others could take one to two weeks for complete recovery. There are approximately 15% unfortunates whose condition deteriorates with passage of time. Their condition gets worse as time goes by.

Sudden hearing loss, affects just one ear, in as many 9 out of 10 people who experience this condition. Even though this condition can affect any age group. Doctors have observed that mostly people within the age group 30 to 60 are most often affected. Sudden hearing loss causes are infectious disease, some head injury, circulatory problems, toxics, intake of harmful drugs, abnormal tissue growth, Cogan’s syndrome or multiple sclerosis. Sudden hearing loss, in any one ear or both, call for an immediate medical attention, as it is believed that the sooner you get the treatment, the faster and accurate will be the results.

There are many treatments, which are being administered for sudden hearing loss, but those researching on this type of hearing loss, have not been able to ascertain which one, are the most accurate. This can be treated by antibiotics or by stopping further use of such medicines that can harm the ear further or cause any type of irritation. Most commonly used treatment, especially in such cases where the cause is not known, steroids are used to correct several disorders. They are also used to fight other illness of the body including the ears. Patients with sudden hearing loss should have a diet with low salt contents. This is done to help those who, along with SSHL, have another disease called Meniere that is disorder of hearing and balancing.
