At the early stage of the disease, it is limited above diaphragm which is the abdominal muscle controls breathing. Radiation therapy is the Hodgkin’s disease treatment option at this stage. The physical experts give external beam radiation on the layers of lymph nodes, chest, under arms and neck region. Some times total nodal irradiation is done when the patient goes severe. In this situation, the physicians give the radiation at the upper abdomen nodes, lower pelvis nodes and spleen nodes. The radiation given depends on the disease stage. chemotherapy is given if the disease is found at the early stage below diaphragm. Chemotherapy may also include radiation therapy at times. The bone marrow transplantation is also followed as an other option for treating Hodgkin’s disease. In this Hodgkin’s treatment, the bone marrow of the patient is extracted and stored. Then high dose of chemotherapy is done and then the stored bone marrow is replaced again intravenously for manufacturing blood cells newly.
Another method of Hodgkin’s disease treatment include peripheral blood stem cell transplant. In this treatment, the stem cells are removed from the blood of patient in small amount and then the blood is retuned back to body. After the treatment for cancer is over the stem cells are again replaced. The same option of treatment is also given in case of children. However, chemotherapy is the often-used treatment option, as this does not affect the growth of the children. It is found that those with the symptoms of AIDS and those who have had organ transplant are more prone to get affected by this disease.
At stage I and II of the disease radiation is the treatment option given for adults and in case of children, chemotherapy or low dose radiation is given. The radiation gives an excellent remission rate. In stage III, chemotherapy with radiation is given as the standard treatment. For stage IV, chemotherapy is the only recommended treatment. At stage I, the Hodgkin’s disease is limited to one node region or involves one nearby organ or area. For Stage IA, Hodgkin’s treatment option depends on the location of disease. For malignancy above diaphragm radiation to mantle field like arm pits, neck, chest and lymph nodes is given. If the malignancy is below the diaphragm, chemotherapy also includes radiation therapy as per the status of the body. At Stage IB, chemotherapy with radiation is given if the malignancy is above diaphragm.
For stage II, disease that is limited to lymph nodes, there is a difference with State IIA and IIB. The treatment option depends on the location of Hodgkin’s disease. For Stage III, the treatment option includes radiation and chemotherapy. This is given either one at a time or in combination depending on the severance of the disease. Generally, the treatment option for Hodgkin’s disease is classified at late stage treatment, wide spread treatment and recurrent treatment.
