The causes for irritable bowel syndrome is still not properly identify. However, it is believed that the muscles and nerves in the bowel are very sensitive to those who are affected by irritable bowel syndrome. The muscle will not contract while eating and this contraction will lead to diarrhea and cramping soon after the meal and in some case during eating it self. There may also some pain experienced by the person. Here are some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. The first symptoms include a discomfort feel for about 12 weeks and some will experience abdominal pain along. The abdominal pain and the discomfort may be relieved during the bowel movement, or when it starts and change in bowel movement often or when there is some change in stool form.

Some of the other irritable bowel syndrome symptoms include change in the bowel movement frequency, change in the bowel movement appearance, an uncomfortable feel and urgency to pass stool, mucus found in stool, bloating and irritability or difficulty to pass stool. The affected person can also experience other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome like fever, loss in weight, bleeding, and prolonged pain. These symptoms may also indicate some other problems like cancer or inflammation some times.

The irritable bowel syndrome symptoms worsen with having large meals, medicines, bloating from gas present in colon, taking food items like wheat, barley, mild products, rye and chocolate. Drinking more alcohol drinks with caffeine like tea, colas and coffee. Moreover, conflict, getting more emotion and stress can also worsen the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It has been found that women particularly during menstrual period experience more symptoms and the reproductive hormones may worsen the problem of irritable bowel syndrome. Moreover, those with this disease are said to frequently suffer due to anxiety and depression and on other way, it will increase the severance of the symptoms.

Irritable bowel syndrome is suspected by the doctors with the symptoms experienced by the patient and by doing physical examination. Some particular symptoms like Rome criteria will help in doing the diagnosis accurately. Some time medical test is also done to treat the symptoms and this will help in knowing if any other health problem is present.

In addition, to blood test and medical test, the lower gastrointestinal series test is done. This is done using X-rays to know the problem in large intestine. This is also called as barium enema X-ray. The next diagnosis is colonoscopy. For this, doctor will insert a thin, long tube called colonoscope in to anus and up in to colon. There is a small lens present in the end of the tube. This will help the doctor to see inside the colon through a television screen. The similar way flexible sigmoid scope is used for seeing the lower colon portion.
