Diabetic neuropathy is a condition characterized by nerve damage due to high levels of blood sugar. People experiencing this condition often suffer from acute pain. There are certain exercises that can help in managing the discomfort and pain occurring due to diabetic neuropathy. Below we have offered some exercising tips that will help you to eliminate the pain.
As a patient with diabetic neuropathy, you must only try performing low impact workouts. Some such exercising forms are: walking, yoga, swimming etc. Swimming is an effective option as water offers natural resistance, which helps in strengthening the bones and muscles. Other than swimming, you can also try other forms of water exercises like water jogging, water walking and water running.
Walking is one of the best exercises for patients with diabetic neuropathy. Walking is categorized among low impact aerobic activities as it never impact any of our joints like majority of the other exercises. For warming up or cooling down, you can walk for 5-10 minutes and if you are exercising for endurance walk brisk for 30 minutes. Patients with neuropathy should do this at least 5 days in a week. This will not only help you in preventing the neuropathic pain, but will also improve your cardiovascular health.
Patients looking to prevent neuropathic pain can also perform certain chair exercises that will not put excessive stress on their legs and feet. Here we have described one effective exercise: sit on a firm chair with you back straight. Extend the right leg in forward direction tightening its knee cap. Now, pretend as if you are pushing the car accelerator. Stay in the position for 5 seconds and release tension. After a gap of 10 seconds start again. This exercise should be performed 4 times on each leg.
