Obesity and bone related diseases are the two problems that cause a major chaos in the healthy life of people, esp. the older ones. They seem to have a backlash bond between them; one is caused because of another.
A new study reveals that these two health illnesses can drastically reduce the number of years the aged can otherwise spend in health.
Obesity and knee osteoarthritis are known to be among the few, most frequently occurring, chronic ill health conditions among the aged. A new study, followed by numerous researches, reveals that Americans, or people in general, who age 50 years and over, are on the verge of losing 86 million years of health, collectively, due to simultaneous or consecutive attacks of obesity and osteoarthritis. The research, which was led by Elena Losina at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, included a demonstration using a mathematical model for assembly of national data pertaining to the occurrence of knee osteoarthritis and obesity, along with some other important health conditions like diabetes, cancers, coronary heart diseases, and chronic lung cancers.
At the end of the analysis, it was clear that both the diseases, knee OA and obesity, are together responsible for the loss of important and beautiful years of health and depletion in the quality of living. The demo also displayed the distribution of such an extensive loss of life among sub populations in the US, on the basis of gender, racial and ethnic factors. “Black and Hispanic women are losing most of these 86 million years of life that are currently at stake”, says the Director of the Orthopedics and Arthritis Center for Outcomes Research, Mr. Jeffrey N., in BWH; the senior authors of the study agree with him. “Looking at these confounding numbers, the urgency seems quite clear to grasp the root of the problem, rescale it to minimum and display the potential benefits of change in behavior”.
